5 mental models to develop thick skin from Ben Meer
Spotlight Effect (Cognitive Bias)
We think people are paying far more attention to us than they are. Harsh truth: Your freedom begins when you realise nobody is thinking about you. This reminds me of a saying one of my friends had which was “paranoia will destroy ya”.
The ‘Procedure or Perception’ Razor
When you receive negative feedback, ask yourself:
-Should I change my procedure (actions I take)?
-Or should I change my perception (how I interpret the advice)?
Avoid constructive feedback from people who’ve never constructed anything.
The 10% Hater Rule
Ben said that he recently received a comment saying that he was “toxically positive.” This reminded him of a quote he loves: “10% of people will find a way to take anything personally. Expect it and treat it as math.” - Tim Ferris
Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is a belief that you CAN improve your abilities through dedication and hard work. Mastery takes time (for everyone). Commit yourself to lifelong learning. In the book “Mindset” by Carol Dweck she says that “this growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others. Although people may differ in every which way-in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments-everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”
No is Normal
Paul Mitchell sold encyclopedias door-to-door before becoming a billionaire (from Patron and hair products).
Life is a numbers game.
Today’s winners often get rejected the most (but persevered).
Keep taking shots on goal; eventually, you will break through.
This reminds me of a famous quote from Ice Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
This quote from Gretzky is a powerful reminder of the importance of taking action in order to achieve our goals.
One final thought from Ben: “Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity.” Colin Powell.
